Sean-Joseph Takeo Kahāokalani Choo is a queer, multi-ethnic, multi-hyphenate theater artist based in Honolulu. Thru his company, Kamamo House (a queer-centered theatre, new work & artist cultivation/advocacy organization, and podcast), Sean creates space for folks to develop work and create community. Sean has worked with theaters in Hawaiʻi and on Turtle Island. Sean was a 2021 Creative Lab Hawai’i Playwrights Immersive Program Fellow, (mentor Chay Yew) in which his play otou-san received highest marks. otou-san was a finalist for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival 2023 as well as semi-finalist for the 2023 National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. Sean’s play the isle is full of noises is a finalist for the 2024 National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and was developed as part of The Playwrights Realm’s inaugural Native American Artist Lab (mentors Rhiana Yazzie & Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl). His dark comedic one-act play, tourist shell shock, based on the Urashima Taro myth, was developed in partnership with The Skeleton Rep, and premiered in New York, June 2022. Sean’s one-man show, i love my AAPI grandparents! premiered in Pan Asian Repertory Theatre’s NuWorks 2022. His play Beretania Snapshots premiered at Kumu Kahua Theatre in March 2024. As a company actor at Honolulu Theatre for Youth, Sean devised numerous shows over the six seasons he worked with the company including co-producing, co-writing, composing, and co-directing “Da Holidays” episode of The HI Way, which won a Regional Emmy in the category of Arts/Entertainment-Long Form Content. ʻImi Ā Loaʻa: Search and Find was an augmented reality project created by Moses Goods, ʻInamona Theatre Company, and the Honolulu Theatre for Youth Ensemble in Spring 2022. The project, of which Sean was proud to co-create, celebrated the rich history and many possible futures living Hawai’i, exploring Native Hawaiian ideas of “time” and “place,” mixing elements of live performance, a walking tour, and digital gaming. He is a member of The Dramatists Guild, TYA/USA, and CAATA.
